Dog Identification Tag

Updated: Mar 9, 2019

Do you know that you could be fined up to £5000 if your dog is not wearing a dog identification tag?

Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992 it mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the owners name, address and postcode engraved or written on a dog's identity tag. Your telephone number is optional but advisable. Some dog owners also like to add their dog's name to the tag and others find it a bit risky if the dog is stolen, but the choice is optional and entirely up to you.

As long as you have the legally required information on your dog's ID tag you will be on the right side of the law.

Correct information to put on the ID Tag:

As a house number and postcode are all that is needed to specify an entire UK address, it is perfectly acceptable to just put those details and your surname. By keeping the information short you will be able to fit it onto a small ID tag where there might not be space for your full address.

Examples:

Mrs J Smith

No 55 CB2 7HH

07923 456789

or

Mrs J Smith

55 High Street

CB2 5HH

07923 456789

Microchipping

It is also the law to microchip your dog. I would advice to state that your dog is microchipped on the ID tag too so that the authorities know to scan your dog.
